Anti-terror barriers installed at Birmingham Cathedral Square market

Anti-terror barriers have been installed at Birmingham Cathedral Square.

The measures are 'to ensure public safety.'

Vehicle mitigation barriers (pictured below) have been installed at the entrances to Birmingham Cathedral in time for the opening of the Christmas in Cathedral Square event

The market's attractions sit beside the 306-year-old place of worship.

The opening night saw the big 'Colmore Christmas lights switch on.'

The new barriers have joined a 999 Bleed Control box (pictured below) recently attached to the cathedral's railings opposite Church Street and the Grand Hotel.

A spokesperson for Colmore BID said: "This is a large public event in the city and the vehicle mitigation barriers were always part of the planning to provide additional security.

"They are not because of any other incidents or because the national terror threat level has been raised to 'severe'.
