Trump to designate Antifa as 'Terrorist Group'

The United States will designate the far-Left group Antifa a terrorist organisation, President Donald Trump says.

The president exposed Antifa as the group responsible for starting riots at street protests over George Floyd's death.

Mr Floyd, a black man, died in police custody earlier this week, which has ignited a race war with Antifa joining forces with Black Lives Matter thugs in violent attacks and destruction of property.

Due to the level of violence by hard-line Antifa members, major cities have had to impose curfews.

The National Guard - the US reserve military force for domestic emergencies - had been deployed in 15 states to help police forces deal with the unrest.

In Minneapolis, where Mr Floyd died, there have been five nights of arson and looting.

On Saturday, Minnesota's Democratic Governor Tim Walz made a totally unfounded claim that foreign influences, white supremacists and drug cartels were behind the violence.

However, on Twitter President Trump blamed "Antifa-led anarchists" and "Radical Left Anarchists" for the unrest.

US Attorney General William Barr has echoed the president, accusing Antifa and other "agitators" of hijacking the protests sweeping across the US.

"The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly," Mr Barr said on Sunday.

The president did not specify how or when he intends to designate Antifa as a terrorist organisation.

There are ways the Trump administration can designate individuals or groups as foreign terrorists, including legislation and an executive order.

In 2019, Republican senators introduced a non-binding resolution designed to declare Antifa organisations as "domestic terrorists".

The British Freedom Party have called upon UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to follow President Donald Trump's lead and proscribe Antifa as a Domestic Terrorist Organisation here in Britain.
